A Study Of Hong Yi’s Faith In Ti-tsang

Master Hong Yi is one of the key figure in the transition period of Chinese Modern Buddhism.His Buddhist thoughts are not only the product of the modernization of Chinese Buddhism,but also an important force to promote the transition of Chinese Buddhism.As one of the Bodhidharmas introduced into China from India,Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva did not form a widespread faith in India,but it had quickly accepted and promoted by the believers after it was introduced into China and became one of the four great Bodhisattvas of Chinese Buddhism,which has great significance of Hong Yi’s Bodhisattva faith system.At present,the academic research of Master Hong Yi concentrate on his literary,artistic thoughts,works,laws and pure land thoughts.But there are few studies on the Faith in Ksitigarbha.Actually,doing research of his faith in Ksitigarbhahas great significance,whether from the perspective of enriching the faith system of Master Hong Yi nor the period of the Republic of China and even the whole Buddhist thoughts.This paper mainly adopts the literature and the comparative research method,and the following questions are discussed bases on the analysis and comparison of the writings related to Master Hong Yi ‘s faith in Ksitigarbha and the influence of predecessors and contemporary Bhadanta on it:First of all,combined with the personal experience of Master Hong Yi,this paper study into the causes and conditions of his faith in Ksitigarbha.On the one hand,his personal experience and the sense of piety of parents is the reason why he faith in Ksitigarbha;on the other hand,from the history of his thought,it has important significance to Hong Yi that Ouyi Zhixu’s faith in Ksitigarbha.Second,comprehensive exposition the trait of Hong Yi’s faith in Ksitigarbha.He combine with the faith in Ksitigarbha and the faith of pure land.Adding the Ksitigarbha faith into the pure land faith,because the both has agree to piety parents.After that,the propagating of classical papers.When propagating the classical papers,he picks the classical and the usual papers,like: the virtue of Ksitigarbha and the myth of Ksitigarbha.Both of the Samantabhdra and Ksitigarbha have the same hopes of human,for this reason,they belong to Huayan.Furthermore,through the discussion of Hong Yi’s faith in Ksitigarbha,we think: Hong Yi’s faith in Ksitigarbha has positive impact on the society,because of his Buddhist thoughts and literary thoughts.All in all,We come to the following conclusions.To begin with,Ouyi Zhixu,one of the four famous monks in the late Ming dynasty,has great significance to Master Hong Yi’s faith in Ksitigarbha,and the experience of his own life have an obvious impact on his Faith in Ksitigarbha and Formed its unique Faith in Ksitigarbha.,which result in the affluent ideological connotation of Master Hong Yi’s word "Taking Huayan as the extent reached,quartering law as the line and pure land as the result".Ultimate,Master Hong Yi’s faith in Ksitigarbha has an important significance to the monk and laymen in the late qing dynasty and the early Republic of China.
