A Study On Interpreting Of Metaphors In A Chinese Premier’s Press Conferences(2017-2019)

In the cognitive view,the significance of metaphor does not only exist in the spoken language of texts and people’s daily communication,but also plays a profound role as a tool to understand the world in people’s ways of thinking,daily activity,and relationships construction.At present,the study of metaphor is mostly concentrated in translation,mainly in literary works,and less in interpreting,especially in political discourse.In the context of severe diplomatic and political occasions,the metaphors involved should be interpreted clearly and without ambiguity.In this regard,this paper adopts the Conceptual Metaphor Theory as the theoretical framework.The author collected the discourse in Premier’s Press Conferences from 2017 to 2019 as research data,using qualitative and quantitative research methods,classify different types of metaphors and to summarize the interpreting strategies adopted for the different kinds of metaphors that occurred in Premier’s Press Conferences.In thesis,a total of 448 metaphorical words occurred in Premier’s Press Conferences are divided into BUILDING metaphor,JOURNEY metaphor,CONFLICT metaphor,MACHINE metaphor,LOCATION metaphor,HUMAN metaphor,ART metaphor,WATER metaphor,ECONOMIC metaphor,ANIMAL metaphor,NATURE metaphor,MEDICAL metaphor,and FOOD metaphor,and the interpreting strategies are summarized into literal interpreting,literal interpreting with explanation,free interpreting and omitting.Rational use of metaphor interpreting strategies is essential to improve the performance of the interpreters and the effectiveness of interpreting.Also,this thesis provides a reference for interpreters in interpreting different classifications of metaphors.
