Assigned by a publishing company, the translator finished the English-Chinese translation of the popular science book The Perimenopause Solution: Take Control of Your Hormones Before They Take Control of You.This report, based on the translation work of Chapter 8 and Chapter 9 of the book, aims to explore the linguistic features of the popular science texts, the difficulties met during the translation and proper translation techniques. This report consists of five chapters. The first chapter describes the translation task and illustrates the significance of conducting the task.In Chapter Two,the translator introduces the process of completing the translation task, including preparations in the pre-translation,work during the translation process and proofreading in the posttranslation. The third chapter analyzes the features of the source text from the perspectives of lexis and syntax.Almost each of these characteristics is followed by the corresponding translation difficulties. The fourth chapter is about case analysis, which exemplifies how the difficulties can be solved through the employment of translation techniques. The fifth chapter summarizes the major findings and limitations of the report, with targeted suggestions provided. The source text includes the following linguistic features.Lexically, there are numerous terminologies, proper nouns, words and phrases with rhetorical devices, the first-person plural pronouns and the second-person singular pronouns;Syntactically, passive sentences, long sentences and imperative sentences are frequently employed. These linguistic characteristics also bring translation challenges.Under the guidance of Newmark’s text typology theory, the translator integrated communicative translation and semantic translation to address translation difficulties with various translation techniques. When dealing with terminologies and proper nouns that are foreign to the target readers, the translator added annotations to make them easy to understand. Some words and phrases with rhetorical devices were paraphrased to ensure that the original meaning and style could be conveyed faithfully.Part of the first-person plural pronouns and the second-person singular pronouns were substituted for a natural and fluent target text. The translator also converted the part of speech of some words to produce a more authentic and concise translation. The conversion of passive sentences into active ones enabled the translation to conform to the conventional Chinese expressions, where passive voice is not preferred.Long sentences were divided and restructured properly to improve comprehensibility.Necessary words were added when rendering imperative sentences to convey the accurate tone of the original authors.Through analyzing the translation task with concrete examples, the translator hopes to provide some suggestions for those engaged in the translation of popular science texts.
