An Analysis Of The Cultural Values Of The Wandering Earth

As the main force to express cultural values,movies have become one of the most effective ways to present culture.In the study of cross-cultural communication,cultural values have always been the focus,few scholars have studied the cultural values of the Wandering Earth.Therefore,this thesis chooses this movie as the research object to study whether the cultural values embodied in the movie are consistent with Hofstede’s theories.Because this research uses cultural value dimensions theories,cultural value naturally refers to the theory involved.On the ground of Hofstede’s cultural value dimensions theories,the thesis designs an analysis framework and raised three questions,which is the applied research of Hofstede’s theories.They are: 1)What are the cultural values in the movie that are consistent with Hofstede’s theories? 2)What are the cultural values that are not consistent? 3)What are the reasons for the consistencies and inconsistencies? It is found that as for collectivism and individualism,collective interests and behaviors are consistent with Hofstede’s theories,but individual decisions are not.As for power distance,the younger generations acting more freely and independently and the relationship between subordinates and superiors being relatively equal are inconsistent.As for uncertainty avoidance,a strong spirit of adventure and “comfortable” with changes are contrary to Hofstede’s theories,while the larger gap between the younger and the elder generation is consistent.As for masculinity,obvious differences in gender roles and different requirements for men and women are consistent.As for long-term orientation,patriotism,perseverance,people-orientation and thinking for the future are all consistent.According to traditional Chinese culture,the movie should embody the cultural values displayed in the theory.Because culture is dynamic,the data in any theory can’t always be right,and will become less accurate as time changes.It is found that the plot of the movie is not completely consistent with Hofstede’s theories.This thesis further discusses the reasons of consistency and inconsistency,that is,cultural values will change with the changes of ideology,economy and history.It confirms the view that culture is dynamic.
