An Analysis Of Chinese And American Cultural Value Dimensions In Saving Face

The differences among diverse cultures can be presented in many ways,and the movie is one of the most intuitive forms to show it.Some scholars have already studied the cultural value dimensions in some movies reflecting intercultural communication.In the movie Saving Face,a markedly cultural differences between China and America showed in it,and there is still no research on the aspect of this movie's cultural value dimensions.The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the differences on the four cultural value dimensions between China and America reflected in the movie Saving Face through applying Hofstede's cultural value dimensions theory.Through comparing the plots in movie with the cultural value dimensions theory of Hofstede,this thesis finds out that in the movie Saving Face,China belongs to high power distance,high uncertainty avoidance,collectivism and masculinity,and America belongs to low power distance,low uncertainty avoidance,individualism and femininity.On the two dimensions of uncertainty avoidance as well as masculinity/ femininity,the plots in movie are not completely consistent with Hofstede's theoretical results.After the comparison and analysis of four cultural value dimensions between China and America in the movie,this thesis further explores the roots that cause the movie's cultural value dimensions differences between China and America from the aspects of history,geography as well as philosophy/ religion.
