| A large number of plastic wastes is dumped into the ocean every year, which has a violently negative impact on marine life and the ecosystem. With further concern of plastic waste in the marine environment, the relevant conference has attracted much attention in the world. This report is based on the symposium titled The Science of Plastic in the Sea,which is held by Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California,San Diego. This source is a form of conference interpreting on science and technology topics, covering marine science, environmental science, geology and other fields. This report is divided into four chapters. The first chapter is task description, the interpreter mainly describes the source, characteristics and significance of the practice. The second chapter is process description, which introduces the interpreter’s pre-interpreting preparation, simulated on-site interpreting and quality control. The third chapter is case analysis, which is also the core chapter of this report. In this chapter, the interpreter mainly proposes four interpreting strategies that can be applied based on Interpretive Theory, namely, deverbalization, logical externalization, sentence reformulation and effective note-taking.According to these strategies, some practical interpreting skills are proposed including:fuzzy expression, paraphrasing, amplification, reference, omission and sentence combination. As the post-interpreting analysis, the fourth chapter summarizes the interpreting practice from three aspects:gains, limitations and suggestion.Through this practice, the interpreter combines the interpreting theory with practice, deepens the understanding of conference interpreting and enhances the ability of flexible application of interpreting skills;meanwhile, the interpreter increases the expertise of marine plastic waste;furthermore,it is hoped that the feasible strategies mentioned in this paper provide reference for future conference interpreting. |
