A Report On The Chinese Translation Of The Client Under The Guidance Of Communicative Translation Theory

The Client is one of John Grisham’s most important novels,which criticizes court and law in America and reflects all kinds of situations and characters in American law and political world.Blade,a famous killer in Mafia,had killed the Boyd Boyette who was U.S.senator,and FBI wanted to get the corpse to arrest Blade.So the body of Boyd Boyette is an important clue in the novel.The novel mainly tells the story that Mark and his family experienced a series of dangerous situations and finally disclosed the truth with the help of the kind lawyer when Mark knew where the corpse was buried.Its exposure of darkness in American society is worthwhile for every reader to rethink of.The Client belongs to the typical popular works,characterized by popularity and readability,with frightening and suspenseful atmosphere owing to the detailed descriptions.There are such descriptions in the novel which are one of the writing features and require the translator to judge the author’s meanings according to the different contexts.Besides,the novel adopts many rhetorical devices,such as metaphors and personifications to make the language vivid and enhance its attraction.According to text typology theory,The Client is classified as a vocative function text.A vocative text emphasizes the response of receptors and is suitable to adopt the communicative translation theory which aims to produce on its readers an effect as close as possible to that obtained on the readers of the original.In terms of the translation of the selected chapters(from 1st to 5th)in The Client,the writer of this report analyzes the key and difficult points,and translation skills employed in this translation practice from three perspectives of the lexis,sentence and dialogue according to communicative translation theory.The skills including diction and conversion are adopted in the lexical translation while synchronizing,recasting and splitting methods are used at the syntactic level of translation.Omission and addition are employed in dialogue translation.And the report is intended to arouse the reader’s interest in this novel and draw their attention to Grisham and his works.
