The present report is on the translation of chapter 6 and chapter 7 from the book,Animals Erased: Discourse,Ecology,and Reconnection with the Natural World.This book is written by Arran Stibbe,who is a famous ecolinguistics scholar.Chapter 6 explores counter-discourses through detailed analyses of how the term biodiversity is used across a wide range of discourses.Chapter 7,taking environmental education in Japan for example,searches for alternative discourses such as haiku that are based on very different assumptions from both the destructive and counter-discourses.The source text appeals to people to pay attention to the biodiversity conservation,which concerns the future survival of humanity,and helps people understand the influences discourse can exert on the relationship between humans and another living species.During the practice,the translator finds that cohesive devices are frequently used in the logic complex academic papers,posing difficulties for the readers to understand what the source text demonstrates,in order to arrange the logical order in texts,some cohesive devices are appropriate and essential.Therefore,cohesion and coherence are adopted in the evaluation of the translation practice.The report is mainly about the translator’s translation process.To start with,after understanding the textual features and purpose of the source text,the translator carefully reviews the terminologies and content related to ecolinguistics to make the translation more accurate and standard.And then,and it pays attention to three cohesive devices in the source text: reference,conjunction and lexical cohesion.In order to achieve a proper transformation in the target text,three translation strategies are adopted,including addition of personal references,addition of conjunction words and repetition of lexical words.The translation of the source text is of great significance.On one hand,it improves the translator’s ability to combine translation theory with translation practice,on the other hand,the author hopes that the translation of the source text,the database established and the summarized methods of dealing with the inconsistence of cohesive devices can be helpful for the Chinese translators in coping with relevant texts.
