This thesis is a translation report of the extracts from Teaching with Your Mouth Shut written by Donald L.Finkel.The translated part is the first,third and fourth chapters of the whole book with the subtitles of Teaching with Your Mouth Shut,which generally tells us the author’s teaching philosophy,Let the Students Do the Talking,from which we can see the specific teaching case about how to create the student-centered class,and Let us Inquire Together,where inquiry-centered classes are introduced.These chapters have involved a lot of personal pronouns,especially the third person pronoun,which is difficult to translate.The report is composed of five chapters.Chapter one is an overview of the entire translation project,including the significance of the translation,as well as a brief introduction to the author and the source text.Chapter two introduces what the translator has done before translating.Chapter three is a literature review concerning personal pronouns.While in Chapter four,the translator firstly counts the number of personal pronouns in the source and target texts in the third chapter of the book,from which it is seen that the number of personal pronouns in the source text is higher than that in the target text,especially the number of the third person pronoun.Then,the differences between English and Chinese personal pronouns are introduced.Thirdly,the main problems the translator has met will be introduced,including how to translate personal pronouns to achieve the natural textual cohesion,as well as the semantic and pragmatic equivalence between the source text and the target text.Finally,representative examples and corresponding analyses will be presented from the perspective of solutions,namely correspondence,conversion,omission,concretization and addition.Chapter five summarizes the translator’s experience of completing the project,hoping to provide valuable suggestions for other peers who plan to translate similar non-literary texts.
