The Translation Of Personal Pronouns In The Novel

This is a report on the translating of Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns.Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns is the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada,one of the best sellers in the New York Times. The sequel continues to tell the storyof the fashion world, and the life of the heroine, Andy Sachs after she left Runwaymagazine where she worked as an assistant to Miranda Priestly.The novel, in asharp and witty tone, is funny, interesting and hugely entertaining.The whole story is told from the perspective of the third person, presentingreaders the inner world of the heroine. And the personal pronouns, especially thethird personal pronouns appear very frequently. Due to the language variation andthe style of the text itself, the translation of personal pronouns has become animportant issue. The technique of literal translation seems, on the surface, to besufficient to deal with the translation of personal pronouns into another language,because mostly each of them in one language has an equivalent in another language.In that case, the literal translation is likely be able to convey the exact meaning ofthe original language. In fact, however, implicit differences between languages, forexample English and Chinese, do exist in many aspects. The English pronounsystem is highly developed, and the language has a high use frequency of pronoun,while the Chinese language all along has a tendency of exclusion toward pronouns,especially the third person ones. Therefore, in order to translate the pronouns inEnglish more naturally and vividly, the translator should have a profoundunderstanding on the pronouns in English and Chinese.In this report, the translator will first make a contrastive study of the usefrequency of personal pronouns in the original text and the translated text, so as topresent the differences of the use frequency of personal pronouns between Englishand Chinese. Then, the translator will talk about the main problems she has encountered and the translation methods she has applied when translating personalpronouns in this novel. It consists of four parts, namely task description, processdescription, cases analysis and conclusion.
