Abstract/Summary:
The Gui family in Ming dynasty was a renowned family in Kunshan area, which had a huge influence locally. The family had already inherited poetry and calligraphy at the beginning of the Tang dynasty, showing an event, five jinshi and six tops.Although the family declined in Ming dynasty,it had a renaissance that had become the well-known education culture family in Kunshan area under the efforts of the famous litterateur Gui Youguang in the middle Ming dynasty.Kunshan was the main battlefield of the battles between the Ming and Qing dynasties, caught in the crossfire. Some descendants of the Gui family laid down their life for their country, while some retired from the world. The adherents of the Gui family, represented by Gui Zhuang, refused to serve in the new dynasty, from which the imperial examination was cut off. Therefore, the once illustrious Gui family was dying out, vanishing from historical records. We make a systematic analysis of the Gui family in Kunshan area from the perspective of family history.By understanding the family situation in different periods and at different levels,I try to connect it with the local society of Kunshan area to explore the relationship between family and state society and analyze the connotation of family culture about ancestral temple, family tree, family traditions and other aspects.Untangling these relationships will undoubtedly play a positive role in exploring traditional Chinese society.
