As one of the most famous dramatists in Belgium,scholars at home and abroad have conducted in-depth studies on Maeterlinck and his theatre works from many different points.Through the analysis of the drama works of Maeterlinck,the author found that Maeterlinck created very unique geographical spaces in his drama works,which not only often appeared in most of the drama works of Maeterlinck,but also showed the author’s strong personality characteristics.From the research results of domestic and foreign scholars on Maeterlinck and his drama works,scholars mostly studied his works from the aspects of artistic characteristics and ideological value,and few articles analyzed from the perspective of geographical space.Literary geography is a new field of study on literature and a branch of comparative literature proposed by Chinese scholars in recent years.Over the years,with more and more experts and scholars paying attention to the study of literary geography,the study of literary geography criticism has been greatly developed.As the core concept of literary geography,geographical space is an indispensable part in the study of literary geography.Therefore,it is of certain significance and value to interpret the drama works of Maeterlinck from the perspective of the geographical space of literary geography.In this thesis,the author mainly studies the problem of geographic space construction in the works of Maeterlinck,and probes into the main characteristics,formation reasons and mutual relations of geographical space in the works of Maeterlinck.This paper consists of three parts:introduction,text and conclusion.The main contents are as follows:The first part is an introduction and puts forward the research value of Maeterlinck’s theatrical works based on the scholars at home and abroad as well as the main contents,research methods and relevant concepts herein.Based on literature criticism geography,this thesis studies Maeterlinck plays in the geographic space construction.The second part is the text,consisting of four chapters:Chapter 1,chapter 2,chapter 3 and chapter 4 respectively explore the peculiar mysterious space,the bright space in the dark,the happy human paradise,and the characteristics of geographical space and their mutual relations.The first chapter mainly introduces forest space and island space,studies the mysticism emerging in these spaces from the aspects of geographic image,dramatic characters,space Settings and so on,and probes into the mysterious space in his plays from the mysticism thoughts advocated by Maeterlinck and the static drama theory proposed by him.In the second chapter,the light space in the darkness mainly reflects the transformation of Maeterlinck’s creative concept.In his drama works,there are often two completely different geographical Spaces,one is the dark castle,villa;the others are thatched houses in the light and cemeteries.The construction of these two types of geographical space shows the change of Maeterlinck’s creative attitude:from early gloom to late positive optimism.The third chapter mainly studies the drama of Maeterlinck from the real world and the beautiful future space.Through reflecting on the writer in the real world and his longing for a better future,it shows the author’s friendly reminder to people in the real world through his works and expresses the author’s pursuit and yearning for a better life.Chapter four studies the geographical space in the drama works from three aspects:the expression of drama theme under the construction of geographical space,character building and temporal relations.The third part is the conclusion,mainly from two aspects:the writers understanding of the world in the geographical space of his plays and the significance of the study of the geographical space in Maeterlinck’s plays.By placing the drama works created by Maeterlinck on the writer’s whole career,this thesis tries to analyze the transformation of Maeterlinck’s thoughts during his whole career,so as to get a more comprehensive understanding of his works. |
