Through the discussion of the Wei and Jin Dynasties’ thought development, cultural heritage and Fan Ye’s own academic thought,we can believe that the Confucianism tendency of Fan Ye’s thought, both prominently reflected in his social and political ideals, but also reflected in his own era environmental awareness and judgment.Influenced by Buddhism,he adopted its favorable factors and applied them to Hou Han Shu,and meanwhile criticized its negative ones explicitly. The prevalent Metaphysics, coupled with Fan Ye’s sensitive character due to his family background and other factors, made him accept some ideas of metaphysics more easily, which formed the historical thinking both emotional and ritual, and historians style of combing argument and literary techniques. After several generations of Taoist reformation in Jin and Song dynasties,Taoism won the support of aristocratic families quickly.Due to the interaction between Fan Ye and Taoists, his Alchemy Biography and other biographies adopted many of Taoism alchemist deeds.Fan Ye had made contribution to the transition from literary-history separation to literary-history integration throughout the whole historical development of Northern and Southern Dynasties. This shows his key role in history.Compared with Han Shu written by Ban Gu,a historian in the Han Dynasty,we can see they not only have much in common but also differ in many aspects. These different aspects just showed Fan Ye’s unique place under the influence of the above ideas.Fan Ye and his Hou Han Shu is recognized as one of the most distinguished historians and history books in China.I think they are well-deserved.
