As an important supplement to the basic medical security system, commercial health insurance plays an important role in constructing a multi-level medical security system in China. The development of China’s commercial health insurance is increasingly vigorous, but compared with developed countries there is also a distance, especially in the field of commercial health insurance for the elderly.Due to the high health risk, the elderly need other security except social medical security.China’s commercial health insurance supply market is increasingly active, but residents’ effective demand is insufficient, participation is not high, this is an important factor affecting the development of commercial health insurance for the elderly. At present, most studies have discussed the factors affecting the demand of commercial health insurance from the perspective of economy, but there are few studies on non-economic factors such as social capital. From the perspective of social characteristics, this paper analyzes the influence of social capital on the purchase of commercial health insurance for middle-aged and elderly residents.Firstly, this paper reviews relevant literature on the influence of social capital on residents’ insurance purchasing behavior.Secondly,it defines the concept of commercial health insurance, social capital and some core theory of commercial health insurance demand.Thirdly, this paper discusses the characteristics of middle and old people’s and middle and old people’s commercial health insurance, analyzes the influence mechanism of social capital and other important factors on residents’ commercial insurance buying behavior, and deduces the theoretical model. Finally,by using the 2015 China general social survey(CGSS)data, this paper makes an empirical study on the purchase of commercial health insurance for middle-aged and elderly people by using trust, regulation and social network in social capital, and distinguishes the rural samples from the urban samples. At the end of this paper, the heterogeneity analysis of the impact of social capital is also made. The main conclusions of this paper include: the lack of effective demand for commercial health insurance for the middle-aged and elderly, and the significant influence of social capital on its trust, regulation and social network.First of all, social capital has a significant impact on the participation of the elderly in commercial health insurance;Neighborhood trust has a significant negative influence on trust, while acquaintance trust and stranger trust have no significant influence.Significant positive effect of specification; In social network, neighborhood network has significant negative influence, while friend network has significant positive influence.Secondly, the regression results of rural and urban samples are different, and the research conclusions of rural residents are consistent with those of the whole country. What had a significant effect on urban residents was that only unfamiliar trust and network of friends had a positive effect. Finally, the influence of social capital in different ages, different economic levels, different social classes and residents in different regions is different and has heterogeneity.Among other influencing factors, residents’ age, health status, social medical insurance, social endowment insurance, economic level and financial market participation have significant influence on the purchase of commercial health insurance. The innovation of this paper first lies in that the research object is the middle-aged and elderly population, and this kind of population is studied separately. In addition, this paper innovates on the research viewpoint, and conducts empirical research on the trust of different people(such as the trust of acquaintances and the trust of strangers),different types of normative levels and different types of social networks, which is more targeted and instructive for the policy Suggestions in the following paper. The shortcoming of this paper is that the data source is lagging behind. The data of 2017 has not been published yet. However, due to the characteristics of social capital that is hard to change in a short period of time, this has little impact on the research of this paper. In addition, this paper does not study the premium expenditure of residents’ commercial health insurance,so future researchers can continue to discuss this issue.
