Since the central government put forward the policy of " mass entrepreneurship and innovation" in 2015,Chinese residents’ enthusiasm for entrepreneurship has continued to grow.According to the 《 2019 China Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation Development Report 》,the number of newly registered enterprises in 2019 has reached 7.391 million,an increase of 10.3% over the previous year, and the average daily number of new enterprises throughout the year was 20,200.Entrepreneurship is a high-risk and high-return activity, which is different from other occupations, such as irregular working hours, high work requirements, and unstable work income. On the one hand, successful entrepreneurs have gained considerable income and applause of the public;on the other hand,in the face of enormous pressure, there are many successful entrepreneurs like Mao Kankan,a post-80 s entrepreneurial star, who died of a sudden illness at an early age.Entrepreneurs’ health issues have repeatedly attracted widespread attention from the government and academia.Previous studies on the health of entrepreneurs are divided into two categories: one is to directly compare the health differences between entrepreneurs and non-entrepreneurs,the other is to compare the health status of different types of entrepreneurs(e.g.,opportunity entrepreneurs and necessity entrepreneurs),few studies have paid attention to the changes in the health level of individuals before and after starting a business in the Chinese context, that is,the impact of the transformation of the entrepreneur’s role on their health.Individuals give up their original status as freelancers or employed workers and transform into an entrepreneur. The so-called entrepreneurial role transformation.Did their health status change before and after they became entrepreneurs? What impact did the entrepreneurial role transition have on their health? Driven by different entrepreneurial motivations, does the role transition of entrepreneurs have different effects on health? Specifically, what happens to the health of the unemployed to the entrepreneur and from the employed to the entrepreneur? What difference will the two make? The above questions are the focus of this paper. To this end, this paper uses the data of the China Family Panel Studies(CFPS)in 2010,2012,2014,2016 and 2018,and uses the Entropy Balance and Difference-In-Difference estimation methods to empirically analyze the impact of entrepreneurial role transition on health. The study found that the transformation of the entrepreneur’s role had a significant adverse effect on objective health and self-rated health.Entrepreneur’s role transformation under different entrepreneurial motivations also has different effects on health.Among them, the role transition of necessity entrepreneurs had a significant negative impact on their self-rated health, while the role transition of opportunity entrepreneurs had a significant negative impact on objective health and mental health, but had a significant positive impact on self-rated health. The results of this paper,on the one hand, help enrich the research on entrepreneurship in the context of China and promote the growth and development of new enterprises;on the other hand, provide reference for optimizing the entrepreneurship and innovation policy.
