Cholera is a highly contagious and highly fatal infectious disease caused by Vibrio cholerae.Together with the plague and smallpox,it is a very important part in the history of public health in modern China.In1932,cholera spread throughout the provinces of the country, and was characterized by its rapid spread, the number of deaths, and social instability. As an important port city,Guangzhou has suffered from a large number of people affected by the epidemic, and rumors are raging, causing huge panic in the society. This article discusses that in the face of the cholera outbreak in Guangzhou in 1932,the government, social organizations, and the people were the subjects of the prevention and control of the epidemic. They were an organic part of the epidemic prevention system. The government mainly organized and restricted the people from the official level. And social forces have also put their efforts into it,supplementing the lack of government capacity, and jointly playing a positive role in the prevention and treatment of cholera.Although the cholera caused serious harm to Guangzhou society, including the high number of deaths, the slow social and economic development, and social unrest and instability. However, objectively it has contributed to the development of public health in Guangzhou and the further improvement of public health awareness and the gradual development of health habits. These positive aspects have played a certain role in suppressing the occurrence and spread of infectious diseases, improving the people’s living environment.Meanwhile,it also promotes the appearance of Guangzhou’s modern city. Finally, starting from the analysis of the causes of cholera,it also provides experience and reflection on how to carry out effective epidemic prevention measures when infectious diseases still exist today.
