With the development of the aging and feminization of the world’s elderly population, the differences in the needs of the elderly within the elderly population have become increasingly apparent.Studies on the elderly from the perspective of gender difference have attracted extensive attention and research in demography, sociology, economics, medicine and other fields, while architectural studies on this aspect are few,and there has not been a study on the design strategy of elderly care facilities from the perspective of gender difference.China has entered the stage of rapid development of aging, the elderly’s demand for care facilities is increasing year by year.At the same time,China has entered a well-off society in an all-round way,and the living standards of the elderly have been comprehensively improved. The existing elderly care facilities have been unable to meet the differentiated needs of the elderly, leading to the high vacancy rate of the elderly care facilities.Japan, the United Kingdom,Australia and other developed countries have appeared gender-specific elderly care facilities and presented a trend of continuous development.Such facilities can meet the needs of male or female elderly people with refined design.Based on the literature research and empirical research on gender-specific care facilities for the aged in Japan, the United Kingdom and Australia, this paper summarizes and compares the characteristics of genderspecific care facilities for the elderly, analyzes their similarities and differences, and puts forward the design strategies of gender-specific care facilities for the elderly and carries out design practices.First of all, conducts statistics and analysis on the current data of gender-specific elderly care facilities in Japan, the United Kingdom and Australia, summarizes their general characteristics, indoor characteristics, outdoor characteristics and supporting facilities characteristics,in order to find the common regularity and summarized as gender retained the elderly care facilities required design elements.Secondly, through to the three countries historical trajectory of gender retained the elderly care facilities, design features,as well as to the same country that retained the elderly care facilities are of different sex,for each gender retained old-age facilities in different countries, natural environment under the background of social development path and specific design features,to provide a factual basis for the follow-up strategy research and planning practice.Further,a series of features of gender-specific care facilities for the elderly are obtained through summary and comparison, and the features are summarized and locally introduced,so as to form a series of design strategies of gender-specific care facilities for the elderly that are in line with China’s national conditions. Finally,on the basis of the design strategy and relying on the second phase of Tongren old-age care community project, this paper conducts a research on the planning practice under the "pre-planning" mode and puts forward a conceptual design scheme for gender-specific elderly care facilities that have not yet appeared in China.Through out the a series of summary, comparison and planning research of the gender-specific elderly care facilities, this paper hope to expand architectural discipline for the elderly care in theory research horizon, and in practice to explore gender retained the old facilities in indoor public space characteristics of each space adaptive design level represents,It is expected to provide a feasible perspective for the detailed design of gender-specific elderly care facilities in China in the future.
