Research On The Spatial Form Evolution And Renewal Of The Waterfront In The Old City Of Yueyang City

The city of Yueyang was born out of water,and for thousands of years,the natural geography of the Dongting Lake and Yangtze River has always influenced the development of Yueyang city.Under the two national strategies of Yangtze River Economic Belt and Dongting Lake Ecological Economic Zone,Yueyang is ushering in new and important development opportunities.As a key area for upgrading the quality of urban space and enhancing the soft power of the city,Yueyang’s old city waterfront is gradually becoming an important area for Yueyang’s urban planning layout.The Yueyang Old City Waterfront has undergone the evolution of Yueyang from the city’s urban emergence to the present day,and with good ecological background and the only Yangtze River shoreline resources in Hunan Province,its development is of great significance to Yueyang and Hunan Province.The transformation and renewal of Yueyang’s old city waterfront can gather more popularity for the area.This paper takes Yueyang’s old city waterfront as the research object,compares the evolution of the spatial form of Yueyang’s old city waterfront,analyses its current situation and existing problems,and proposes targeted renovation and renewal strategies.Firstly,the background,purpose and significance of this paper are explained,and the current situation of relevant research is summarised,and the influence of water systems on the urban development of Yueyang is proposed.Then,in the historical context of the political pattern,social culture and economic development of Yueyang’s old city waterfront,the spatial morphological characteristics of Yueyang’s old city waterfront are described in three stages: ancient,modern and contemporary,from the macroscopic spatial morphological evolution characteristics and microscopic urban spatial morphological components,including the water space,boundary space,street space,urban roads,architecture and public space,etc.The analysis will summarise the evolutionary development patterns.Then,at the level of urban design,the current situation of Yueyang’s old city waterfront is analysed from the perspectives of spatial structure,road structure,land use,landscape system and architectural features;at the level of node design,the five most representative typical spaces in the development process of Yueyang’s old city waterfront are selected for field research and analysis.Finally,according to the evolution and development rules and existing problems of Yueyang’s old city waterfront,the macroscopic transformation and renewal objectives of restoring the ecological environment,creating a cultural living room of the city and stimulating the vitality of the waterfront space are proposed,as well as the transformation and renewal principles of wholeness,ecological balance,accessibility,publicness and the continuation of the city’s cultural heritage.Based on these principles,the paper proposes the transformation and regeneration concepts of reinvigorating the old harbour area,revitalising the historic district,preserving the heritage of the historic district,and protecting and reusing the industrial heritage.This paper hopes to seek clues for further development in the historical context through the evolution of the spatial form of Yueyang’s old city waterfront,as well as to inspire the transformation and renewal of the old city waterfront of similar large and medium-sized waterfront cities.
