Since the internationalist style, the buildings in the city have become monotonous, lacking the characteristics of national culture, and have become buildings with similar forms but isolated from each other. As a result, the impression of the city has also been destroyed.People’s familiar places no longer exist, and their memory of the city gradually disappears. The proliferation of internationalist style makes the architecture lose its diversity and symbolic significance. This situation is also common in the process of modern urban construction in China.Urban architecture has become a kind of machine and no longer has the spirit of architecture.Faced with this phenomenon, postmodernism proposes to extract elements from classical architecture and to use them in modern ways, namely, the traditional use of tradition. However, although postmodernism has put forward new architectural design methods,it seems that the development of architecture has stagnated due to the superficial form of architecture. Therefore,in order to truly develop postmodern architecture,we must re-examine the development process of architecture and the most important theories of postmodernism. The design and development of architecture has experienced many stages since the Renaissance, and there has been a great breakthrough in modernist architecture.Later, postmodern architecture has challenged modernism again, just as modernism challenges classicism.Modernism constructs a new order, but removes unnecessary elements from the classical order, making the architectural form single.Postmodernism seems to be about reestablishing the abandoned classical order. Therefore,in people’s view, classicism, modernism and postmodernism seem to be completely different styles with clear boundaries, but this is not the case. They come down in one continuous line and represent the development of national culture and history.Postmodern theory is actually a response to ordinary life problems like the return of classical spirit. The "crown hall" of the Architecture Department building built by modernist architect Mies van drow for the Illinois Institute of technology should be a great achievement of modernism. There is no need for any load-bearing structure inside,or even beams and partitions. This architectural form is the ultimate pursuit of pure space and constructs a new modernist architectural type.Louis Kang reconsidered the culture and historicity of architecture, rebuilt the wall from pure space,no longer showed the spatial flow without shape and boundary, but rebuilt the poetic wall. This move seems to explain the development process of postmodernism.Postmodernism advocates the non-traditional use of tradition to break the stereotyped style of architecture since internationalism, which is only a breakthrough in the form of postmodern architecture. For postmodernism,it is more important to understand Louis Kang’s restoration of classical order, and more important to see the continuation of architectural thought and the dual order that architecture should establish. The greatest theoretical contribution in this regard is the complexity and contradiction of architecture written by Robert Venturi and urban architecture written by Aldo Rossi. Therefore, this paper takes the architectural views of venturi and Rossi as the starting point to think and study the architectural development since postmodernism, and takes the complexity and contradiction of architecture proposed by venturi, that is,the decoration and function of architecture should coexist,In addition,Rossi proposed the way of architectural type and place memory to look at the development of contemporary architecture. At the same time, this post-modern architectural view has many similarities with the traditional Chinese architectural composition, which is conducive to the development of contemporary Chinese architecture.
