| Globalization,de-industrialization,suburbanization,political system changes and other factors have caused more and more shrinking cities around the world,and this is not a short-term phenomenon.The previous studies on shrinking cities focused on resourcebased cities and old industrial cities in Germany、the United Kingdom、the United States etc,which already completed the process of urbanization.However,rapid urbanization areas have also experienced urban shrinkage.In recent years,Chinese scholars have paid attention to the research field of shrinking cities.A large number of studies have been conducted on the shrinkage phenomenon,characteristics,and mechanisms in the Northeast of China.There are also a small amount of research involving Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region,Yangtze River Delta,Pearl River Delta and other regions.Case studies on shrinking cities can analyze urban shrinkage phenomena,characteristics,and mechanisms from a more microscopic scale,and can also provide reference from special cases to general experience for similar cities.In this context,the article focus on Huaibei,which is a typical resource-exhausted city.As an important energy base in the Yangtze River Delta,Huaibei is facing problems such as population loss,industrial transformation and upgrading,exhaustion of coal resources,and shortage of land resources in recent years.This paper takes the Huaibei city area as the research scope and adopts a series of research methods such as the combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis,field survey method,and GIS spatial analysis method.First clarify the research problem,summarize the related theories and existing research on shrinking cities.Then analyze the basic social and economic situation of Huaibei City,comb the development history of the spatial form of Huaibei,judge the shrinkage time of Huaibei,identify the shrinkage space of Huaibei based on the Arc GIS platform using night light data,and discuss the characteristics of the shrinkage space distribution in Huaibei Afterwards,select typical shrinkage spaces,combined with statistical data,planning data and field survey data,to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the shrinkage characteristics,shrinkage mechanisms and coping strategies of residential and industrial spaces.The main findings of this study are as follows: First,the shrinkage space distribution in Huaibei presents a pattern of “large dispersion,small concentration”,and at the same time shows the characteristics of perforated shrinkage.The shrinkage space distribution is highly correlated with the distribution of mining areas.The shrinkage space is mainly residential land and industrial land.Second,the shrinking space of residential land is mainly represented by the unit yard and resettlement houses.The material space of the unit compound is aging,population loss and population aging are serious,there is a small amount of idle building,and the physical space of resettlement houses is relatively new but insufficient supporting facilities.Facing the dilemma of population loss and population aging,there are also complex issues of property rights.Third,the shrinking space of industrial land presents features such as idle workshops and land,insufficient connection between industrial land and surrounding land,and mismatch between industrial structure and labor resources.Fourth,the shrinkage of residential space is caused by the complex effects of factors such as the decline of the coal industry,the reform of state-owned enterprises,the changes in the housing system,the expansion of urban space,the relocation and transformation of old industrial areas,complex property rights issues,and low salaries.Fifth,the shrinking of the industrial space is caused by many factors such as the decline of traditional industries,difficulties in industrial transformation,extensive land use patterns,crowding-out effects of the environment,and constraints on production factors. |
