Under the background of industrial transformation and upgrading in China,the positive response of enterprises makes design-driven innovation gradually become an important innovation mode after market-driven innovation and technology-driven innovation.In the outline of the National Innovation-driven Development Strategy issued by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council in 2016,it is emphasized that it is necessary to speed up the integration and development of industrial design,cultural creativity and related industries,and enhance the ability of design innovation in key industries in China.At present,the phenomenon of technology homogenization is serious,and the function and appearance of many enterprises are the same,which is one of the reasons why China’s manufacturing industry is downstream in the international industrial chain.An example of a better-selling Airpods than a genuine one is a positive illustration of technological progress in China and a reverse illustration of the success of Apple’s design innovation.The role of technology in product differentiation strategy is weakening day by day,and enterprises must rely on design to improve innovation increment.Because design is interactive and interdisciplinary,we can better deal with the increasingly complex process of product design innovation by searching for design innovation resources from outside across enterprise boundaries.Dynamic ability theory holds that cross-border behavior will cause organizational practice change,organizational practice renewal will form new norms and promote the formation of enterprise innovation ability.Under this background,this study focuses on the basic framework of "boundary spanning search--the evolution of organizational routines--design innovation capability",and comprehensively uses structural equation model,hierarchical regression analysis and other research methods,as well as mathematical statistical tools such as MPLUS and SPSS for empirical analysis.It combines open innovation theory,design-driven innovation theory and dynamic capability theory,and clarifies the mechanism of boundary spanning search and design innovation capability.Firstly,using boundary spanning search as independent variable,the relationship between market knowledge boundary spanning search and technical knowledge boundary spanning search is studied.Secondly,the evolution of organizational routines is introduced as intermediary variable to study whether it has intermediary role in the model.Finally,strategic flexibility is introduced as regulatory variable and divided into two dimensions: resource flexibility and coordination flexibility to verify whether it plays a regulatory role in the relationship between boundary spanning search and functional innovation ability and semantic innovation ability.This paper empirically analyzes the relationship between boundary spanning search and design innovation capability,and examines the mediating role of the evolution of organizational routines and the regulatory role of strategic flexibility.The results show that :(1)boundary spanning search for technical knowledge is inversely U to functional innovation ability,market knowledge boundary spanning search is inversely U to semantic innovation ability;(2)the evolution of organizational routines positively affects functional innovation ability and semantic innovation ability;(3)there is an inverted U relationship between boundary spanning search for technical knowledge and the evolution of organizational routines,and market knowledge boundary spanning search is positively related to othe evolution of organizational routines;(4)the evolution of organizational routines plays a part intermediary role between technological knowledge transformation and functional innovation ability,but not significantly between boundary spanning search of market knowledge and semantic innovation ability;(5)Resource flexibility positively regulates the curve relationship between boundary spanning search of technical knowledge and functional innovation ability,and coordination flexibility is beneficial to promote enterprise semantic innovation ability.Through the empirical analysis and the discussion of the hypothesis test results,this puts forward the following management implications for enterprises :(1)enterprises should use design innovation as a guiding strategy for enterprises to develop new products;(2)in the process of improving their design innovation ability,users should not tell enterprises,but must actively search for boundary spanning technical knowledge and market knowledge;(3)boundary spanning search needs to weigh risks and interests,considering the intensity of boundary spanning search and carefully considering different boundary spanning knowledge sources to maximize their design innovation.(4)Enterprises should pay attention to the evolution of organizational routines;(5)enterprises need to ensure an appropriate organizational environment and highlight strategic flexibility to enhance design innovation.
