In recent decades, urbanization has increased the proportion of people living in cities especially in developing countries. To provide quality urban environment for urban sustainability has become a key policy focus in many countries.Attention has been increasingly paid to the creation of green spaces in urban area.As a result, many mega urban projects have taken the low-carbon theme as a new development direction.Yet,how urban residents evaluate green spaces of these mega urban projects remain under researched. This master’s thesis seeks to examine the users’ satisfaction on green spaces in mega urban project development, using Lingang New Center in China as a case study.Lingang New Center is the first mega urban project in Shanghai that focuses on low carbon development. This thesis adopts Jagannath’s public space theories to analyze the quality of green space from aspects of sociability, accessibility, functions and comfort.Based on a face-to-face questionnaire survey in Lingang New Center,semi-structured interview and site observations, this thesis analyzes residents’ evaluation on the four aspects of urban parks,near-community green spaces and in-community green spaces respectively. Both quantitative methods and qualitative methods are used for interpreting the differentiations of residents’ satisfaction on green spaces and identifying possible influential factors. The analyses revealed that, initially, the provision of green spaces in Lingang New Center underlined to promote an image of low-carbon and socially mixed communities in the mega urban project.Although green spaces receive relatively good satisfaction from the residents, there are several concerns in the sociability, accessibility, functions and comfort of on different types of green spaces. For example,in-community green spaces work as important sociable places for residents but they lack quality for comfort.Urban parks are provided with a range of functions for tourists, yet they are hardly accessible for local residents. To address these problems, local government needs to emphasize on users’ demand and experiences of different green spaces in the development of mega urban projects.
