| Conceptual design is of critical importance to the success of function, performance, manufacturing cost,as well as many other aspects of mechanical products.Due to this reason, many researchers have been engaged in the study of the conceptual design methodologies and the design process of mechanical products, with TRIZ(Theory of Inventive Problem Solving)and AD(Axiomatic Design Theories)being some of the representatives.TRIZ theory helps designers to analyze functional problems, solve design conflicts, and provide guidance for the development of technical systems, whereas Axiomatic Design theory helps build the design thinking framework, and evaluate the functional relationship by its independence axiom so that the appropriate design scheme can be obtained.Until present, there are some researchers who have conducted substantial work on applying the two theories collectively to product design. However, due to the complexity of product design process, the existing researches still have some limitations, and it requires careful adaptation on the existing methods upon application to specific products. To this end, this thesis conducts the following aspects of research work.Firstly, the application of both TRIZ and AD theories to conceptual design process is investigated, with the advantages and disadvantages of the two theories being analyzed. This is accomplished with consideration of current research direction and the intense of integration between the two theories.Based on this result,an integrated conceptual design model is proposed based on the combined application of TRIZ and AD.This model exploits the advantageous aspects of both theories by integrating those essential theories and tools in a scientific and logical way, including the conflict solution theory, the functional coupling determination tool, the design solution evaluation method, and so on.With this model,it helps to tackle the problems of existing methods in such places as occasional incapability of solution finding due to limited degree of integration between TRIZ and AD theories.Secondly, the proposed integration model is further studied by applying the model into the design process of practical design cases,so as to verify the feasibility of the proposed methods. This is done by comparing the results from the proposed model with those from some of the existing models and methods.During this process, the strength of the proposed model is demonstrated in more detail, and the various application situations are also further elaborated. Finally, the proposed integration model is applied to the conceptual design of an automatic wafer angle sorter, which also fulfilled the urgent design task from the author’s company.Through study of this design process, the proposed design model and methods are further examined. The results demonstrate that they provide essential help to designers of practical design problems, and they offer helps in design thinking and problem solution in a different approach than those from other design methods. |
