With the rapid development of Chinese engineering design industry,the number of engineering designers is constantly increasing.At the same time,due to the fierce competition in the industrys,the heavy workload and the more complex modern construction projects,engineering designers are under the pressure of significant job stress.Research findings show that excessive job stress has a seriously negative impact on the individual’s psychological and physiological health,job satisfaction,as well as the economic performance of the enterprise.However,few research has focused on the topic of exploring the relationship between job stress and job satisfaction among engineering designers.This article takes engineering designer as the research target,and aims to:(1)identify the critical job stressors of engineering designers;(2)evaluate the job satisfaction level of engineering designers;(3)analyze the differences of the factors affecting the job stress of engineering designers from the perspective of different demographics features;(4)analyze the differences of job satisfaction level of engineering designers from the perspective of different demographic features;(5)develop a model illustrating the relationship between job stress and job satisfaction for engineering designers.This article is divided into seven sections.The first chapter introduces the industry background of Chinese engineering design,summarizes the research status of job stress and job satisfaction,puts forward the research objectives and research significance of the paper,and determines the research methods and research flowchart of this article.The second chapter elaborates on the relevant theories of engineering designers,analyzes the job responsibilities of engineering designers in different disciplines and their corresponding job stress.The third chapter concentrates on the literature review of job stress and job satisfaction,to identify the source of job stress,the evaluation factors of job satisfaction level.Based on the result,a preliminary hypothesis model is established.The fourth chapter illustrates the research design,which introduces the research targets,process and tools,as well as research methods employed.The fifth chapter conducts statistical analysis on the questionnaire data,including item analysis,reliability analysis,descriptive statistical analysis,difference analysis,correlation analysis and regression analysis,and followed by the structure equation modelling analysis on the relationship between the job stress and job satisfaction.The sixth chapter explores the interview results.Based on the statistical analysis results of the questionnaire survey,22 engineering designers were interviewed to further validate the research findings.The seventh chapter summarizes the research findings and suggests future research directions.This study obtained 330 questionnaires,of which 290 were valid questionnaires,with a valid rate of 87.9%.The data analysis results indicate that:(1)The critical job stressor among engineering designers in China is the task stressor(3.37),while organizational stressor(2.50)and personal stressor(2.40)are not significant.(2)The job satisfaction of engineering designers in China is in medium level(3.29),of which the satisfaction with salary and benefits gets the lowest score(2.74).(3)Significant differences in task stressor exist between the designers with different educational levels,and designers of master graduates have highest level of task stress(3.39).Designers from different job positions have significant differences in task stressor and overall job stressor.Architectural designers have the highest level of overall job stress(3.04).(4)Significant differences were found in the level of salary and welfare job satisfaction among the designers with different ages.The designers less than 20 years old have the highest level of job satisfaction.Marital status of the designers has significant impact on the salary and welfare satisfaction,job satisfaction and overall satisfaction.Generally,the married engineering designers have a slightly higher levels of salary and welfare satisfaction,job satisfaction and overall job satisfaction.(5)It was found that a linear relationship exists between job stress and job satisfaction among engineering designers.The level of job stressor influencing on the job satisfaction was determined through regression analysis results.The correlation model between the job stressor and job satisfaction was developed through structure equation modelling analysis.The research results of this article advance the job stress and job satisfaction theory,and provide theoretical reference to effectively manage job stress and job satisfaction among engineering designers. |
