The Variable Design Strategy Of Dining Room In Small-medium Sized Residences By Actual State Investigations

Along with the development of the times,family structure and users’ lifestyle has changed.There are contradictions of bedroom needs and dining room needs in small-medium sized residences.House with three rooms can reduce the overall use efficiency because the waste of the third room and the excessive compression of the dining room.But house with two rooms are hard to meet the demand of a third bedroom later.The family members and structure modes are dynamic processes at different times,and the residents’ function demand also change constantly accordingly.There is no a good solution to reconcile the contradictions of bedroom needs and dining room needs in small-medium sized residences at present.Confronting the contradiction of bedroom needs and dining room needs,the main research work and results are as follows:First,this paper finds the problems of the allocation in current small-medium sized residences from the investigation of its using status in Zhengzhou,Wuhan and Changsha.The results show that the use efficiency of dining rooms in small-medium sized residences is much lower than that of the large one,and the use efficiency of the third bedroom in the small-medium sized residences is also low.Secondly,eleven houses including two common patterns of small-medium sized residences——“end and middle suite” in different cities were selected for household survey.The research analyzes the relationship between the using status,house design and living demand.It is found that the low utilization of small-medium sized residences’ dining rooms result from the excessive compression reduce its comfort on the background of adding the third room.The low utilization the third bedroom is because general family doesn’t need three bedrooms during whole life cycle.Finally,according to the development of times and changes of users’ lifestyle,we propose the strategy of variability design from three dimensions of aims,conditions and methods.Two major patterns of dining room are constructed by combining different family structure modes.In the early stage,house with two rooms and two halls provide residents with a big high-comfort dining room to meet their dining needs,and later the dining room can be transformed into a bedroom to meet the needs of a third bedroom.This variable dining-room design for two rooms with two halls adequately considers the residential demands in family’s whole life cycle,and then achieves optimal overall coordination on space take advantage of different use time,so as to improve the efficiency interior space from whole cycle.Furthermore,twelve kinds of conceptual residences with a variable dining-room are proposed to provide the reference for small-medium sized residences’ design.
