Urban morphology in the historical period is distinctive.However,under the background of globalization and rapid industrialization,many cities have similar and declining features.The spatial pattern which is stably inherited in regional morphology is similar to genes controlling biological characters,and this pattern is the key to inherit and develop regional characteristics.So,research on the morphology genes is helpful to protect and inherit the regional characteristics of settlement.Compared with city,the historical features of traditional settlements are well preserved,less affected by industrialization,and easy to identify the fundamental morphological genes.Taking seven famous historical and cultural towns in Ba-Yu region as samples,based on field research and the theory of morphological typology,combining spatial analysis and econometric statistics,this paper analyzed the common characteristics of "famous town" about land,street and block from the meso scale,and revealed the cause of its formation.on the basis of the foreword analysis,this paper analyzed morphology gene and established gene map.Finally,the paper discussed the effect of morphological gene on urban development and regional characteristics.As to land use,street and block,this paper used the logic of feature recognition,generation cause analysis,common feature extraction,gene analysis and expression,map construction to analyze morphological genes and cause of morphogenesis.The paper identified the common characteristics of land layout from four aspects of residential,commercial,cultural and administrative land use.Then identified the common characteristics of street structure from six aspects of integral pattern,plane linear,spatial enclosure,street heading,intersection and the relationship between streets and water.And then identified the common characteristics of block morphology from three aspects of block outline,block area and plot combination.Finally,this paper analyzed the causes of morphogenesis,constructed a common feature map,and graphically expressed each type of characteristic factors.Based on the recognition of common features,the paper concluded four genes of land layout(centrality,highland,superiority and random),three genes of street structure(fish ridged and along with landform,trunk shaped and main street dominated,fish ridged-Trunk shaped and compound),and morphology gene of block(unsealed and small-scale).At the same time,the paper constructed gene map and gene expression map of Ba-Yu region.These genes not only reflected the continuation of traditional construction ideas,but also reflected the uniqueness of regional culture in Ba-Yu region.Based on the identification of common features and gene analysis of three types morphological elements(land use,street network and street block),the paper constructed the spatial morphological gene database of traditional settlements and gathered spatial and attribute data.This database can provide data support and theoretical basis for protecting traditional settlements and inheriting regional feature.
