From the comprehensive proposal of green credit policy in 2007 to the establishment of the ninth green financial reform pilot zone in Lanzhou in 2019,green credit has become one of the important financing sources for green enterprises. At its ninth meeting,Central Finance and Economics Committee has included "carbon peak" and "carbon neutrality" into the layout of ecological civilization construction, clearly following the path of green economic development, seizing the opportunity of the green industrial revolution, and achieving high-quality economic development. With the gradual improvement of green credit policy, green credit,as the most important financing method for green enterprises, can encourage the development of energysaving and environmental-friendly enterprises and guide the progress of new energy technology. The implementation of green credit is inseparable from commercial banks as an important financing medium. At the same time, commercial banks can improve their reputation and obtain more potential benefits through green credit policies. This will better mobilize the enthusiasm of commercial banks to implement green credit business, enhance the importance of commercial banks to green credit policies, and ultimately expand the financing channels of green enterprises and promote the large-scale development of green industries.Through referring and analyzing related documents, this paper analyzes the impact of implementing green credit policies on commercial banks’business performance under current credit policy background, and concludes that commercial banks can improve their reputation by implementing green credit policies.Good reputation enables banks to establish social image, increase industry competitiveness and improve business performance. However, such implementation will also bring certain risks to commercial banks, leading to a decline in operating performance.Based on the data of 71 commercial banks from 2006 to 2020,this paper constructs a double-difference propensity score matching model to study the operational performance of commercial banks under the green credit policy. The empirical analysis shows that the implementation of the green credit policy will help commercial banks improve their operational performance. In order to study the mechanism of green credit policies on commercial banks’ operating performance, risk transmission mechanism and green reputation impact mechanism are introduced. The empirical results show that the risks of implementing green credit will have a certain negative effect on commercial banks’ business performance, but they can improve their business performance by maintaining a good green reputation.According to the empirical results, this paper puts forward below.Firstly, strengthen policy support to increase the subjective enthusiasm of banks and enhance reputational influence.Secondly, enhance information disclosure mechanism to reduce external risks of commercial banks.Thirdly, establish a sound internal bank credit management system to reduce risks from inside out.
