The 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China proposed that enterprises must strengthen their awareness of social responsibility. In early 2020,during the COVID-19 outbreak, the Law on the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases required companies to actively fulfill their social responsibilities. However,in 2020,a number of safety accidents occurred in the chemical industry, causing great harm to the society.Actively fulfilling social responsibility is the inevitable choice for enterprises to achieve long-term development.Senior executives determine the overall goal and development direction of an enterprise and restrict the efficiency and effect of the fulfillment of social responsibility. This paper studies the influence mechanism of executive background on the performance of social responsibility,as well as the mediating effect of internal control quality, which is of practical significance to promote enterprises to regulate their own behavior and better fulfill corporate social responsibility. In this study,A-share chemical listed companies listed on Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchange from 2015 to 2019 were taken as the research objects. The four dimensions of average age, average education level, female proportion and average tenure were taken as the measurement of executive background, and the four dimensions were statistically and regression with internal control quality and social responsibility score data. The relationships between executive background and social responsibility fulfillment, executive background and internal control quality, and internal control quality and social responsibility fulfillment were tested with empirical methods. On this basis,Bootstrap was used to test the mediating effect of internal control quality. There are differences between state-owned enterprises and non-state-owned enterprises in terms of institutional constraints and executive assessment, employment and promotion mechanism, etc. Therefore, the samples are further divided into state-owned enterprises and non-state-owned enterprises from the perspective of property rights to study the relationship between the three groups。The results show that the average age,the average education level, the proportion of females and the average tenure of senior management have a positive impact on the performance of social responsibility, and the promotion effect of the average age and the proportion of females on the performance of social responsibility is stronger in the state-owned group. The average age, average education level, female proportion and average tenure of top management team all have positive promoting effect on the improvement of internal control quality. In state-owned enterprises, tenure has more obvious effect on the improvement of internal control quality. The quality of internal control can positively influence the performance of social responsibility; The quality of internal control plays a partial mediating role in the relationship between the four dimensions of senior executives and the performance of social responsibility. The mediating effect intensity of internal control quality in the average tenure dimension is higher than that of the other three dimensions.Based on the research conclusions, suggestions are put forward from the four aspects of attaching importance to the characteristics of corporate executives, improving the employment mechanism of enterprises, establishing and improving the performance assessment system of corporate executives’ social responsibility, strengthening the construction of internal control of enterprises and strengthening the construction of corporate supervision mechanism,so as to better fulfill corporate social responsibility.Execute senior management integration to optimize internal management and improve the quality of internal control to provide empirical data support. |
