Molten steel tank truck is a main equipment for transporting high temperature molten steel on the ground for the continuous casting process in steelmaking industry. It is subjected to large load bearing and impulsion load during the transportation of molten steel tank truck. The problem of transportation safety is prominent. Therefore, the structural strength and transportation safety are critical in the structural design.By the applications of the traditional and empirical design methods, the molten steel tank truck uses too many materials and complicated structural components, but the structural strength cannot always be satisfied and the cracks can be generated in operation.Once the ladle car fails to turn or the frame breaks, the ladle capsizing can appear. In order to prevent the occurrence of these situation, the structural strength and reliability should be accurately analyzed in detail to avoid structural damage and safety accidents. The present paper investigates the damage of the frame structure of a molten steel tank truck by the finite element method. The main research work are as the followings:(1)According to the design drawings of the molten steel tank truck, the three-dimensional structural model and three-dimensional finite element model in whole scale are built by using Solidworks 3D software and Hypermesh software.(2)According to the load bearing and impulsion load during the transportation, the finite element analyses are implemented and the simulating results of the stress and deformation fields are obtained.(3)By the use of the results of the finite element analyses, the structural strength are evaluated. It is found that local high stresses over the material strength of Q345-B.The local high stresses will cause the cracks.(4)To reduce the local high stresses,a scheme of optimizing for the frame is put forward. The stresses and defamations of the molten steel tank truck designed by the optimizing scheme are simulated by the corresponding revised finite element model. The numerical results shown that the local high stresses are reduced and the structure becomes safety. The research method in this paper is applicable to heavy metallurgical equipment. It can accurately analyze the structural strength and stiffness and provide the theoretical basis for the analyses of structural damage and the optimization scheme.
