Study On The Function Of Film Costume From The Perspective Of Structuralist Linguistics

Clothing,as the silent carrier in the film,plays an equally important role with language,which is indispensable.The film is short in time,compact in plot and rich in content.With the help of costumes,the connotation of the film can be better displayed.The study of the role and function of clothing in films is of positive significance to the understanding of film.With the help of the structural linguistics theory,on the one hand,combined with the theory of clothing,film and Saussure's structuralist linguistics,and put forward a new set of clothing's linguistic theories,including clothing langue and clothing parole,clothing signifier and clothing signified,clothing syntagmatic relation and clothing associative relation,clothing synchronicity and clothing diachronic,in order to study the specific application of costume linguistics theory in the film.On the other hand,by combining the theory of clothing and the linguistic function of the Prague School,a new set of linguistic function theory of clothing is put forward,including the function of information transmission,the function of emotional expression,the function of application,the function of beautification,and the function of communication,which is a preparation for analyzing the function of costume in films.Then take drama as analysis object and establish a material library,we found that under the clothing's linguistics theory support,clothing help films to show age characteristics and cultural connotation,to shape characters,to lead the fashion trend,to create a visual aesthetic feeling and aesthetic artistic conception,to shape the style of whole,to reflect character emotional change,to build the scene atmosphere,to promote the plot development,etc.By classifying and summarizing the above eight specific applications of clothing in films,it can be divided into five linguistic functions of clothing,namely,information transmission function,emotional expression function,application function,beautification function and communication function,thus completing the union of structuralist linguistic theory,linguistic function of clothing and film works.Therefore,with the support of structuralist linguistic theory,the study of film costume can realize the interdisciplinary integration of structuralist linguistic theory,costume theory and film theory,and provide a new theoretical direction for the analyze the function of costume in film.
