Hunan burnt-sweetness tobacco-planting area is one of the important burnt-sweetness tobacco-planting area in China with excellent quality,remarkable burnt-sweetness type and high industrial availability.There are differences in the quality of tobacco leaves in each tobacco-planting area,so knowing about the differences in the quality of tobacco leaves in different tobacco-planting areas is of great practical significance for the cigarette industry to rationally use tobacco raw materials and improve the industrial value of tobacco leaves.In this study,the appearance quality,chemical composition and sensory quality of 120 samples of upper tobacco leaves from burnt-sweetness tobacco-planting areas,such as Hengyang,Chenzhou,Changsha,Yongzhou and Shaoyang in Hunan were evaluated and compared to clarify the quality characteristics of upper tobacco leaves in different tobacco-planting areas.The research results are as follows:(1)Appearance quality characteristics of tobacco leaves: The overall score range of appearance quality was 87.66-74.20,with an average score of 82.61.The color of tobacco leaves in all tobacco-planting areas was "orange",the body of tobacco leaves was "medium",and the oil content score was "abundant".The maturity of tobacco leaves in Changsha tobacco-planting areas was "mature",while that in other tobacco-planting areas was "fully ripe".The leaves structure in Changsha tobacco-planting area was "to be loosened",while that in other tobacco-planting areas was "loosened".The color of tobacco leaves in Hengyang,Shaoyang and Yongzhou tobacco-planting areas was in the "strong" grade,while that in Chenzhou and Changsha tobacco-planting areas was in the "high" grade.(2)Chemical composition characteristics of tobacco leaves: The content ranges of total sugar,reducing sugar,nicotine,total nitrogen,potassium,chlorine and starch in each tobacco-planting area were 22.10%-24.69%,19.79%-22.02%,2.84%-3.62%,2.01%-2.23%,1.52%-2.47%,0.36%-0.58%,2.64%-4.05%,respectively.The ratio of sugar to alkali was6.12-8.59,the ratio of nitrogen to alkali was less than 1.00,and the ratio of potassium to chlorine was more than 4.(3)Tobacco types and quality characteristics: In Chenzhou and Changsha tobacco-planting areas,the types and characteristics of tobacco leaves here were as follows:strong overflow aroma and density of the smoke;great impact;good combustibility;good aroma quality;abundant aroma quantity;fine diffusive aroma;tiny raw green odor,green odor,ligneous odor,burnt gas;smooth,soft,mellow,a little irritative and dry smoke;and pure and comfortable aftertaste.In Hengyang tobacco-planting area,the types and characteristics of tobacco leaves here were as follows: strong overflow aroma and density of the smoke;great impact;good combustibility;good aroma quality;abundant aroma quantity;fine diffusive aroma;tiny raw green odor,green odor,ligneous odor,burnt gas;smooth,soft,mellow,a little irritative and weak dry smoke;and pure and comfortable aftertaste.In Yongzhou tobacco-planting area,the types and characteristics of tobacco leaves here were as follows: strong overflow aroma and density of the smoke;great impact;good combustibility;good aroma quality;abundant aroma quantity;fine diffusive aroma;tiny raw green odor,green odor,ligneous odor,burnt gas;smooth,soft,mellow,a little irritative and weak dry smoke;and pure and comfortable aftertaste.In Shaoyang tobacco-planting areas,the types and characteristics of tobacco leaves here were as follows: strong overflow aroma and density of the smoke;great impact;good combustibility;good aroma quality;abundant aroma quantity;fine diffusive aroma;tiny raw green odor,green odor,ligneous odor,burnt gas;smooth,soft,mellow,a little irritative and dry smoke;and pure and comfortable aftertaste.(4)Industrial value of tobacco leaves: Industrial availability is an important criterion for evaluating tobacco leaves quality.Among the tested samples,the proportion of high-grade main tobacco samples in Chenzhou tobacco-planting area was 14.29%,while that in other tobacco-planting areas was 0.Hengyang tobacco-planting area has the highest proportion of main tobacco,accounting for 33.33%,while Chenzhou accounts for 14.29%.Changsha tobacco-planting area has the highest proportion of auxiliary tobacco,accounting for 100%,while Hengyang tobacco-planting area has the lowest proportion,accounting for 0.In the proportion of filled tobacco,Hengyang tobacco-planting area has the highest proportion,accounting for 66.66%,while Changsha tobacco-planting area has the lowest proportion,accounting for 0.(5)Correlation between chemical composition of upper tobacco leaves and characteristic indexes: there were negative correlations among some substances,such as tobacco flavor type,flue gas concentration and sugar-alkali ratio;aroma quality and potassium content;total sugar content and permeability of tobacco;tobacco burnt gas and potassium content;tobacco irritation and reducing sugar content.There was a positive correlation between some substances,such as the strength of flue gas and the content of nicotine and potassium;content of total sugar and chlorine and permeability of tobacco leaves;total nitrogen content and tobacco burnt gas.And there is no significant correlation between aroma quantity,aftertaste and chemical composition.
