With the rapid development of modern science and technology, the space-time distance between people is suddenly shortened. The international communication under the "global village" is becoming more and more frequent and convenient, and various civilizations are constantly colliding. Many countries have developed many cross-cultural theories on the way of seeking common development,so as to transcend the cultural gap.The author will use the cross-cultural theory to interpret the different African tribal cultures in different cultural backgrounds.Based on a large number of literature research and African culture research from complexity to simplicity, this paper combs the culture, language, religion, cultural activities, lifestyle and other profiles of the major tribes, based on which the design connotation is analyzed, and supplemented by Geert Hofstede's cultural onion model theory in Cross-Cultural Theory to carry out surface(Symbolic layer),outer(Hero layer),middle layer(Ritual layer),inner layer(Value layer). These four levels of image overview, the cultural tradition of its clothing under the dominant and recessive characteristics are deeply analyzed. With the above research methods, the author lists the related tribal symbolic elements,at the same time, based on the "harmony" thought of Chinese traditional culture, integrates and extracts each design element, makes the culture blend, and feeds back to the four design points of cross-cultural clothing: external aesthetics, structure profile, symbolic function and core concept, and produces five sets of clothing works. And through the symbolic language of clothing to help understand foreign culture, put forward the yearning and exploration of tribal culture, hoping to promote the study of African tribes. The main body of this paper is divided into five chapters, the important middle section is the second and third part of the theoretical research, which is the fourth part ofthe clothing design process to make academic theoretical guidance. The second chapter studies the concept of African tribes and the basic characteristics of African tribal elements in various cultural fields, and completes the systematic overall tribal cognition through the table sorting;the third chapter starts with the cross-cultural theory, and focuses on the comparison of the similarities and differences between Chinese and African cultures,in addition to the specific analysis of the four levels of the onion model theory to provide the design process of the fourth chapter The last chapter is about the important role of African tribal elements and the application of cross-cultural theory reflection and summary.
