Three-dimensional(3D)knitting is a sustainable way of production.It does not produce any waste,nor require any further joining treatment.In this study,3D knitting seamless technology has been investigated by using 3D knitting techniques including suspended stitches,tubular knitting,and stitch transferring.The design and production of all the components for the IKEA Vallentuna sofa covers have been carried out on a computerized flat knitting machine.3D knitting capability was affected by yarn materials,stitch,partial knitted angle and flat knitting machine gauge.Two types of polyester filaments,four knitted stitches and four partial knitting angles were employed for knitting 32 types of 3D knitted fabrics on a computerized flat knitting machine of gauge E14,in order to study their effects on the 3D knitting capability.The results showed that bigger partial knitting angles are not easy to knit which would cause uneven take-up tensions and thereby giving rise to loop ascending;interlock and 1+1 rib are easier for partial knitting than single jersey and single jersey variation;600D/512 F DTY polyester is better than 600D/256 F ATY polyester to achieve a good visual effect.Sofa cover fabrics must be firm and wear-resistant to ensure no obvious breakage and pilling in the end uses.The above mentioned two polyester filaments and four knit stitches were selected to knit 8 sofa cover fabrics.Air permeability,abrasion,snagging and bursting tests were conducted to evaluate their physical properties.Based on the test results,600D/512 F DTY polyester filament was used for knitting the components of Vallentuna sofa covers.This study developed the components of IKEA Vallentuna sofa covers which include a bench(a main body and a base),a sofa armrest,a sofa backrest and a pillow.Choosing the best 2D deployment method,appropriate yarn,weft knit stitches,and suitable partial knitting angles is crucial.It is preferable to use interlock for big 3D fabrics and single jersey or single jersey variation for small fabrics.For steeply widening,waste yarns should be knitted first until their fabrics are completely held by the roller.Intarsia technique can be used to make horizontal openings in the fabric.It should be noted that the stop positions of yarn feeders should be carefully set.Package is very convenient to speed up the microgram process.
