The study was conducted at Banjul city, which is the capital of Gambia,as an island City,it is currently facing serious climatic impacts due to sea water rises. Many effects have been observed, for example,as the sea water rises, the erosion process along the coastal line is accelerating, which threatens the existing safe and secure settlements.Hence, with great terror and fear, city dwellers have been, shifting of the economic activities to the main land and it has also reduced the city vibrancies. Also, there massive loss of biodiversity, the ecology of the city is under a great threat as the native species of trees, animals, birds and the land resources are disappearing.Hence, this affects the lives of human being within the city’s jurisdiction.Banjul City is the smallest local government area in the Gambia, with an area of approximately 12 square kilometers and a population of 29,047(6,112 households). The city is divided into three districts. It is the national capital, the main economic center, and the seat of government administration. The city’s population is declining, but business activities are continuing because it generates 45% of the government’s GDP.The total area of wetlands in Banjul is about 6,034 hectares and the total construction area is 1,200 hectares. The focus of the research is on flexible planning to find appropriate methods to deal with the impact of rising sea water,so that Banjul City becomes better and more resilient. The study puts forward some goals to help researchers conduct research within the scope of the goal and achieve tangible results to better respond to the planning of Banjul City.Consequently, the study focuses on determine the influences of the planning practices to enhance the resilience aspects as the important strategy to mitigate the effects of the climatic changes faces the city and enhance the sustainability. To reach the target, the researcher developed series of questionnaire to facilitate the collection of genuine data from the public as one part of tackle the issues of climatic effects in the case of sea water rises in Banjul,as well rectifying the information through scientific proofs form the authority necessary to deal with climatic issues in Gambia. Thus, the following question were used by the researcher to enhance data acquisition: What are the current challenges hindering planning for resilience to climatic effects in Banjul city? What are the effects of sea water rises as one of the climatic change’s outcomes to the sustainability of Banjul city? Finally, what are the unique resilience planning initiatives and suggestions for the measures to be adopted to rescue the city patterns? The study employed a variety of methodologies for the purpose of attaining the researcher’s goal. The study design was case study design, involving in-depth data collection from the scientific and social point of view in the issues of climatic changes and the study employed mixed approaches in attaining data to facilitate genuine analysis. Most of data collection methods and instruments were used namely: interview, questionnaires, focus group discussion, physical observations and scientific documentary reviewed. Thus, all these aspects were targeting the realization of the overall and specific goals of researcher. The impact assessment due to data collected indicated that there are needs to take quick planning measures to strengthen the resilience of the city from serious impacts of sea water intrusion as effects of climate change, the impacts of the saltwater intrusion has been categorized from environmental including the costal erosion, sea water intrusion and massive loss of biodiversity to social aspect that associated with loss of residential, increasing the burden to infrastructural improvement, loss of vibrancy and economic improvement within Banjul as there is shift of economic zone to the mainland of Gambia. The study concluded by exploring the effects of sea level rises to the influence of urbanism and city prosperity. The planning aspects could play a significant role in creating sustainable and resilience of the city and enhance the wellbeing. The recommendation to adopt the spatial planning as measures to improve the condition though effective resilience strategies aims at reducing these impacts, enhance pro-poor,carbon-neutral development projects, protect vulnerable areas along the beach, protect the remaining mangroves and other critical costal habitats, protect urban infrastructure and populated areas in Banjul. The study is crucial in provision of the information that can help direct future researchers in their studies in focusing on the concept of urban resilience planning to combat climate change,to achieve a well balance economic growth, environmental protection, infrastructural and sustainable development.
