Abstract/Summary:
Today's economy is a knowledge based economy, where human capital creates a competitive edge in most business situations. Knowledge is considered as an enterprise asset, whether in the form of accumulated employee training, experience, education, or the accumulated enterprise's expertise. With the advent of internet and data mining, people are able to capture more knowledge than ever, and new communication technologies help to share and develop that knowledge with each other. Organizations therefore cannot ignore the insights that employees can offer, but organizations have to create an environment where people can create new ideas and collectively work on them. The knowledge is however often lost due to inability to retain knowledge within organizations when employees leave their jobs, or simply employees are not willing to pass their knowledge to colleagues and work together on developing ideas. The purpose of this research is to identify the challenges of knowledge sharing (KS) in organization and determine successful factors for knowledge sharing and collective intelligence. The literature review showed the main categories that play important roles in knowledge sharing are technology, people and organization. The goal of the paper, therefore, was creating a model and recommendations to support people, technology and organizations in fostering effective knowledge sharing and collective intelligence. Being able to facilitate coherent and effective KS enables organization to take full advantage of organizational knowledge and employees' collective intelligence.
