Abstract/Summary:
The idea of a "Dual Ladder" has been used successfully by some companies for years as a means of rewarding and motivating technical performance.; The paper will report the results of a survey of sixty-five technical professionals at the TRW Steering and Suspension Division. In the survey, engineers, technicians, designers, and engineering managers were asked to rate their expectations in the areas of job advancement, careers, job satisfaction, and job dissatisfaction. Responses indicate there is a significant difference between promotion and a technical position and job satisfaction and career growth. In other areas of interest, responses indicate that job advancement is not a solution to job dissatisfaction. Promotional opportunities were not clearly defined within the departments which may lead to a career plateau. Job satisfaction was rated as more important than career growth.
