Abstract/Summary:
The Internet of Things is a term used to describe smart objects capable of accessing the Internet, exchanging data between operator, manufacturer, and other Internet capable devices. There are more Internet capable devices throughout the world than there are people and the expansion of remote capabilities and data sharing have created interconnectivity never before seen. This global expansion has attracted manufactures and entrepreneurs alike, eager to advance in the market. Currently this technology is advancing at a rapid pace and is introducing devices designed to impact users households. Smart home devices are designed to gather user information and create a living environment custom to the users lifestyle. Smart home technology has great potential but manufacturers have outpaced the security capabilities and users security and privacy has been neglected. A wide array of devices, software, and hardware has provided vulnerabilities for Internet criminals to exploit. This paper will examine research on smart home devices/systems and evaluate their impacts on security and privacy while introducing recommendations for consumers.
