The project site, Insa-dong, is characterized as a mixture of traditional Korean urban structure and modern urban structure. The site is located at a juncture between the expanding city fabric created by new developments and the well-preserved city structures that consist of traditional residential houses, palaces, parks and alleys which have great historical and cultural value. This project site exemplifies a conflict between preservation and development.;The focus of this project is to provide a design plan to maintain the historic character of the Insa-dong area without applying for a new designation as a historic preservation district. This project also considers Insa-dong as a "market place for cultural goods--antiques, art and entertainment." The design concepts focus on creating a vital environment for commercial activity physically, mentally and emotionally.
