A microcomputer-based portable monitoring system was developed with the capability for quasi real-time processing of microseismic data. It proved to be rugged and reliable in collection of data in underground mines. Multi-tasking feature of the monitoring software allows data processing data while monitoring microseismic events.;A series of laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the characteristic changes in microseismic events as rock samples were held under different constant loads. No general conclusions could be made from the analysis of the results due to limited number of rock samples, their differing sizes, sample resonant frequency, different loading rates and possible interference from electromagnetic radiation in the laboratory. Recommendations are made for future laboratory tests. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).
