Of all possible injuries to children five years of age and under, 89% are estimated to occur in or near the home (Fife, Barancik, & Chatterjee, 1984). Children are also injured at Family Day Care Homes (FDCH) which are the least regulated of day care possibilities. Many injuries are related to home hazards, but few studies have addressed this problem in FDCH's. This study attempted to design a hazard assessment instrument and observer training to assess hazards in FDCH's. The reliability of the Hazard Checklist and the effectiveness of the Observer Training were both found to be appropriate for assessing safety of FDCH's. |
