Abstract/Summary:
It is not widely appreciated that Canadians were active during the Second World War in the field of aviation medical research. It is the objective of this thesis, therefore, to examine the achievement of Canadian aviation medicine during World War Two. It is the contention of this thesis that, because no specialized historical study of Canadian aviation medicine has ever been undertaken, the achievements of Canadian aviation medicine are not properly appreciated, nor are they adequately acknowledged. In fact, during World War Two Canadians confronted some of the most challenging and exotic scientific questions ever raised. Moreover, Canadian medical scientists conducted their research in the most desperate of circumstances. Despite these challenges, Canadian scientists prevailed and earned an international reputation for aviation medical research.
