Abstract/Summary:
Injuries are an important cause of death and morbidity globally. Work-related injuries are of particular concern for farm populations, where the place of residence is also a location of work. This two-part study examines two aspects of the burden of agricultural machinery injuries using data from the Canadian Agricultural Injury Surveillance Program (CAISP).; The objective of the first analysis was to describe and compare proportions and rates of fatal and hospitalized injury caused by agricultural machinery occurring in Ontario, 1985 to 1996, by gender. Analyses were based on 2,333 injuries and six descriptors: age group, time period, and agricultural season in which the injury occurred, machinery involved with and mechanism of injury, and admission type following injury, a proxy measure of severity.; The objective of the second analysis was to provide a comprehensive estimate of the economic burden of agricultural machinery injuries in Ontario between 1985 and 1996.
