Abstract/Summary:
The method for optimal placement of models in the rapid prototyping machine work space, when using the selective laser sintering method, has been discussed and an algorithm for the placement has been proposed. Part placement in the work space in the machine is an important factor in the machine utilization. As the technology shifts from making just prototypes to being used as one of the methods for the actual part production, the more parts being made simultaneously the more economical will be the method, thus making it more affordable and preferred.; An algorithm for part placement in the work space has been developed. This algorithm implemented in a program using C language fills the work space with parts by partitioning the work space into layers, and then filling these layers one after another. The program arranges the parts after the parts have been placed in a preferred orientation.
