The scope of this thesis will be limited to the investigation and comparison of the characteristics and performances of Fuzzy Logic Control to those of Proportional, Integral and Derivative Control (PID), in different control applications. The controller performance and characteristics will be analyzed through computer simulation, and real time implementation.; Fuzzy Logic controllers with different characteristics will be designed in Matlab (control systems design software). The process to be controlled is that of a paper-stock flow box (paper manufacturing machine flowbox).; Implementation of fuzzy logic control will be by a data acquisition board, to control the temperature of an aluminum plate, subjected to external disturbances. A fuzzy logic controller will be designed and implemented in Labview{dollar}sp{lcub}rm TM{rcub}{dollar} (data acquisition software).; Each controller will be subjected to a large disturbance input. The process to be controlled does not have an accurate transfer function.; Simulation results demonstrate that fuzzy logic controllers are faster in response, compared to the PID. The number of rules, as well as the degree of overlap of membership functions affect controller output. There is need for more extensive research in the area of fuzzy logic implementation. |
