Abstract/Summary:
A Trench and Gate system, which is a modified Funnel and Gate system, was installed at the East Garrington Gas Plant in Alberta, Canada. The two systems were numerically modelled and visualized using three-dimensional groundwater modelling software. First, the systems were modelled, in a homogeneous environment to compare their capture zones in several configurations. The Trench and Gate system had a much larger capture zone. Second, the system was modelled in a complex heterogeneous environment. Three-dimensional visualizations demonstrated the effects of site specific heterogeneities on the capture zone. Third, a transient infiltration event was shown to simulate a water table mounding over the trench and infiltration gallery. The response showed a temporary gradient reversal in front of the trench and Gate system, which had a minor effect on the capture zone. A CD format video illustrated the three-dimensional geometry's of the capture zones for various configurations in a homogeneous environment.
