Abstract/Summary:
XML (eXtensible Markup Language) has emerged as the standard for data interchange in the Internet world. XML databases are packaged in the marketplace as extenders or cartridges to the existing commercial relational database management systems. Interoperation of relational databases and XML involves schema and data translations. In this thesis, we develop algorithms for displaying XML schemas extracted from EER schemas. These algorithms are part of a tool called EER2XML, which allows users to develop customized XML schemas for extracting XML documents from underlying relational databases. We will give a brief introduction about how to translate relational database schemas to XML schemas, and give an overview of the EER2XML Designer Tool. Our algorithm adapts the Walker graph drawing algorithm for general trees to better suit the specific requirements for displaying EER hierarchical views, and centers child nodes under their parent nodes in a more desirable manner.
