Both feeling and displaying media are very important components in multimedia family. Although Audio/Video techniques have developed quickly at present, smelling and tasting technique are made very little progress in the multimedia study; although many display techniques have appeared and attained wide applications, the development of the high definition display being broader in its wavelength band and higher in its color resolution, is not satisfied by now. Fortunately, Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) effect can be applied to make smelling and tasting sensors and can be used to make novel displays.SPR effect is a kind of basic physics-optic phenomenon which has two important characters including that while the parameters of the modulation layer are fixed, to change the refractive index of the measured object will result in the changes in the resonant wavelength or intensity and while the refractive index of the measured object fixed, to change the modulation layer parameters will result in the changes in the resonant wavelength or intensity. SPR sensors are designed based on the former character and SPR displays based on the latter one.The main study contents in the dissertation are consisted of SPR principle, optical fiber SPR sensors and SPR displays.Firstly, the SPR principle is described theoretically in detail. Meanwhile the conditions to excite the SPR, the theoretical equations and the methods to compute the relative parameters are presented.Secondly, the principle of the optical fiber SPR sensors are studied detailedly and the theoretical equation to compute the output spectrum is deduced which has been proved correct by the experiments. Furthermore, the dispersive parameters of gold film are modified based on both the experiment results and the theory equation. To make optical fiber SPR sensors having higher performance, the influences of all parameters involved are discussed and analyzed systematically and the ranges of these parameters are provided from the sensor characters including anti-interference, detection sensitivity and detection range. The design method of the distributed optical fiber SPR sensors is studied and the example is presented too.Thirdly, the optical fiber SPR detection systems are studied in detail and the original system, improved system and optimal system are compared where the performance of the improved one along with the influences of its all components is focused on. Moreover, data processing is a very important aspect and the method to estimate the resonant wavelength is given which has been proved appropriate and effective by experiments. At the same time, the calibration, temperature induced drift and self-drift have been studied concretely, and the data processing of the distributed optical fiber SPR sensors is discussed.Fourthly, the SPR display principle is presented and the math relations between the display color andbright and the parameters of modulation layers are established. Both the single and multiple display elements are studied and designed and the simulation result is given too. This study and the former work prove that to design the SPR display apparatus with broader wavelength band and higher color resolution is realizable completely.Finally the existing problems and further study directions of the study field are pointed out.In a word, the deep studies about the smelling, tasting media and display media both theoretically and experimentally will establish a foundation to further researches.
