Abstract/Summary:
A method was developed to calibrate magnetic field based lightning detection system using AM station signals as true known references. The AM signals in the frequency band between 550k–1660kHz are classified and documented in the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) archives. This agency maintains records on physical location and transmission power, among other data, for each station that operates legally. Using these data, the theoretical reception of each monitoring station was determined. The AM stations around the monitoring station were registered using voltage samples received at each monitoring station. Using the monitoring station information and the AM stations position, the error was calculated between the processed voltage signals and real azimutal angle. Using the calculated azimutal angle, triangulation was used to verify the system operation. Using the standard deviation of azimutal angle, as a measure of error, a correction to the average azimutal angle was made. Results of triangulation using these corrections are and documented in this thesis.
