Abstract/Summary:
The school is the intermediate link between family and community life in democratic society. The habits of moral behavior are inculcated in the classroom community which provides an arena for the development of moral habits and virtues necessary to sustain our democracy. This study examined different approaches of moral education in the middle school language arts/social studies curriculum. Data were collected during a four month period through observation, class discussion, and written assignments in 3 eighth grade classrooms in a suburban middle school. Findings suggest that an approach to moral education through writing and discussion allows for students to identify, define and understand the connection between a moral point of view and the democratic ideal.
