Abstract/Summary:
Many companies utilize their resources to blindly collect statistical data. Often, this is done to show the customers that the product is given attention. It is the opinion of the author that most companies do not understand the statistics, they do not collect information correctly, and they do not utilize the statistical information.; The following thesis discusses a sound method to utilize the statistics for decision making and process improvement. The thesis evaluates proper methods to measure, analyze, improve and control processes by means of statistics. It also presents a case study of the proper use of statistics. This case study provides a method that can be used to improve any process.; This paper presents and discusses methods utilized by General Electric to improve processes. This methodology was adopted by Holm Industries and utilized to improve customer opinion and company profit by reduction in the cost of quality and evaluation of new material.; The actual project discussed in this thesis a material control improvement. This control improvement resulted in a reduction of approximately {dollar}75,000 in the cost of quality and a minor reduction in the cost of processing both at General Electric and Holm Industries, Inc.
